How To Control Direction of Travel on Skates

Writer's picture: Coach ECoach E

BEGINNERS — ever got on skates trying to stay still and couldn’t control your roll? One reason may be bad posture, but the second reason is probably your foot orientation!

If you find yourself unintentionally rolling FORWARD, it’s probably because you naturally stand “slue-footed”, or with your toes turned outward. You may want to adjust by turning your toes inward slightly.

If you find yourself unintentionally rolling BACKWARD, it’s probably because you naturally stand “pigeon-toed”, or with your toes turned inward. You may want to adjust by turning your toes outward slightly.

To remain NEUTRAL or at rest, your goal is to keep your feet straight forward. This may be a challenge to master for a short time, but you’ll eventually find your footing!

Once you’ve mastered staying still, now you can INTENTIONALLY orient your feet outward or inward to travel forward or backward, respectively! Don’t forget to SAVE or SHARE with a friend! Hope to see you in skate class soon! Visit stepandskate.com/events to see if we have a class near you!
